We asked our partners what they are enjoying reading and listening to this summer and why. Here is what they said:
Silent Spring by Rachel Carson
Why? One of the seminal books on environmental conservation.
The Broadscast: The best all-female, Vancouver based, sports podcast that’s out there.
The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music by Dave Grohl
Why? Dave Grohl weaves the stories of his youth, and ours, in both a warm and edgy way. I loved listening to him tell his own stories on audiobook. I’ve always appreciated his music, but listening to the stories that mean something to him makes me respect and like Dave Grohl more than I thought I would. He comes across as intelligent, hardworking, and down-to-earth. His inclination to pair KFC and champagne is endearing. Thoroughly enjoyed it!
The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
Why? Should be mandatory reading for all humans. It has some excellent advice, including:
“There is an art, it says, or rather, a knack to flying. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss.”
And
“You’d better be prepared for the jump into hyperspace. It’s unpleasantly like being drunk.”
“What’s so unpleasant about being drunk.”
“You ask a glass of water.”
The Sun Down Motel by Simone St. James
Why? It’s the feminist cold case ghost story I never knew I needed. A fun escapist read that will leave you feeling just a little bit empowered.
Smartless: hosted by Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes. Lots of laughs but also a heart warming bromance triangle for those whose love language is winding each other up.
Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend: silly and smart humour, by one of late night’s most beloved hosts. Also, the only place you can reliably hear the work “cockaroo!”.
